Church Preservation!
Preserving the past for our future
In 1894 people began to meet in the schoolhouse for church. They decided that they needed a building and excitedly went about raising money. They were very outspoken about being able to erect it debt-free so a lot of work went into raising the money. The first Pastor AC Graham, helped raise the money himself. He was pretty self-sacrificing about it but,a note could be found in the margin of the church record books "Received only $40 in salary all of 1896"
(His actual salary was to be $150) Much of the work done on the church was completed by Mr Martin Strayer. He even made the pews from local wood. The church had the foundation laid when one of the founding members passed away. Alice Strayer was the first person to be buried in 1896. They placed her casket on the church foundation (Because that is all there was) and then put her to rest in the cemetery adjoined to the church. This is the only church cemetery combo in Shasta County, which makes this church of historic significance. We at the Oak Run History Group are trying to save and fix up the Oak Run Church of 115 years! Please join our cause! Email us and see how you can help. |
